When it comes to Christmas, we do things a bit differently in Australia compared to a lot of other places in the world. The whole ‘Winter Wonderland’ thing just doesn’t ring true when you’re lounging around in 30-degree heat, does it? For most Australians, Christmas is all about gathering your family on the deck and enjoying a day of good food and fun in the sun. Christmas at the Beach
Many Australians who live near the coast have the tradition of heading to the beach for Christmas morning. In other parts of the world they’re likely putting on their finest attire and us Aussies are chucking on our swimmers and likely spending the day with salty hair and sandy toes. Forget your new Christmas cologne, the only thing you should smell like is the sunscreen that you’ve slip slop slapped on. And chances are, your trip to the beach will allow you to test out some of your Chrissy presents, maybe you got a new bodyboard, a pair of goggles or a funky beach towel.
Spending Time with Family and Friends
Okay so this isn’t specifically an Aussie Christmas tradition, in fact, it’s pretty universal, but we reckon Aussies do it better than anyone else. Can you imagine living in the northern hemisphere and stuffing your whole extended family into your living room like sardines because everyone is afraid to step a toe outside into the freezing temperatures? Thanks, but no thanks. In Australia, we invite our loved ones over to spend a nice relaxed day out on the patio sipping a cold beer and watching the kids having fun on a slip and slide or maybe, if you’re lucky, having a swim in the pool. It’s all about outdoor entertaining in Australia, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
