Is Insulated Patio Roofing Worth the Extra Cost?

When you’re about to build a new patio, one question you’re guaranteed to be asked is if you want an insulated patio or a non-insulated patio.

All SEQ Patio Group purchases come with the option to be built as an insulated or non-insulated patio (with the exception of the open-close roofing). You may be thinking to yourself, ‘What’s the point of having insulation outside?’. Well, it does a tremendous job at keeping you comfortable while you enjoy the outdoors and is especially good at making those extreme Aussie weather conditions more manageable. Plus, if you plan on including electrical accessories like lights and fans, it’s the only option for you.

What’s the Cost?

Ok, let’s dive into the details right away! With an insulated patio, you’re getting a product that offers the best functionality and design, so it will cost extra.

As a general rule of thumb, you may pay an extra 30% overall for an insulated patio roof compared to the more affordable “single skin” roofing. But like we said, if you want an alfresco area that is equipped with lights, fans and has a ceiling-like finish on the underside, an insulated patio roof is the best option for you.

Luckily, SEQ Patio Group offers several zero-interest payment plans for insulated patios. Our Entertainer Patio Package starts from $43.20/Week, which lets you get the patio of your dreams now and pay it off in manageable bite-sized increments.

Is It Worth Paying Extra For Insulated Patios?

Co-owner of SEQ Patio Group and long-time patio builder Brent Clark has helped thousands of Aussies find their dream patio. When it comes down to if it’s worth getting an insulated patio over a single skin, Brent says, “The short answer is yes.”

“Insulated Roofing gives a superior look and style to the finished product. It (also) allows us to run cabling ready for future downlights and fans, (whereas) the non-insulated panels do not have that option,” he said.

“More importantly, it does knock the heat out of our hot, summer sun, as well as being quieter in those heavy downpours we get in SEQ.

“Our clients are going to outlay a significant cost whichever way they choose to go, we suggest the returns on outlaying a little more upfront, outweigh the costs of replacing your non-insulated patio, down the track.”

What’s a Single Skin Patio?

As the name suggests, a single skin patio roof consists of one layer of steel that has had a high-gloss finish applied. The powder coated finish still offers a pleasing aesthetic when finished, however, it has no way to keep the heat out on the scorching summer days. Because of that clash of hot and cold areas, condensation often covers the underside of the patio roof, which can result in uncomfortable drips, especially in the morning.

What’s an Insulated Patio?

Insulated patio roofs are manufactured using a 3-part gluing process. The underside is a high tensile steel, the topside is traditional roofing iron, both of which house a piece of foam insulation in the centre. These make for thicker and more durable patio roofs. An insulated patio is widely considered the more attractive option of the two. Also, it opens you up to many lifestyle benefits like installing lighting or heating and cooling systems. This is because electrical wiring can be concealed inside the roof layers and properly protected from the elements.

If you want to cover a large area with your patio, insulated roof panels are also able to span longer distances, without any internal beams, due to the somewhat structural nature of its construction. Overall it’s thicker, stronger, able to be walked on in most cases, whilst still offering a modern and sleek look. Obviously, the biggest advantage is advanced temperature control, but insulation also helps with noise reduction, which is great in noisy environments. We’ve all been under a patio when the rain is so loud against the tin roof that it can be hard to hear yourself speak. While it can be relaxing at first, it makes conversation difficult, especially while entertaining guests. Insulation assists in noise reduction on your outdoor patio and can even soften some outdoor noises before they reach your homes. Some of our past clients have opted for insulated carports to reduce the noise that enters their house from nearby roads.
